Writing is all about making choices. The author didn't start the sentence with "And" on accident. It was a choice. A deliberate decision. (Even though he probably had a teacher along the way who taught a false truth that you should never start a sentence with and or because.)
Why do you think the author made that decision?
It's one of the most important questions we can ask. We might never know the answer, but the learning is in the asking.
